NewTech Conference, Newry

Newry Digital are organising a mini conference aimed at developers and those connected to the tech industry. The NewTech conference will take place on Saturday 7th March 2020 in the Mardyke Suite at the Canal Court Hotel.

Newry Digital are a group of local IT professionals who meetup to share and promote technology in the Newry area. The group have been organising technical meetups in Newry for several years on topics as diverse as cryptocurrency, drones, web and mobile development. 

The topics for the conference in March will include cloud computing, machine learning and cybersecurity, given by local developers including Jonathan McDowell (Nebulon) and Killeavy man Brian Teggart. Brian Cleland will describe an analysis of travel times to local hospitals using Python in a Google Colab notebook. Lorraine Barry and Conor Graham will will delve into topics related to geoscience data. Mark Tumility of Kainos will talk about agile service management and ITIL.

The conference is aimed at tech professionals and aspiring students and is made possible with sponsorship from Liberty IT, Kainos, eShopWorld and the British Computer Society.


Speaking about the event, organiser Joe McKevitt said “we are hoping to attract attendees who are interested in software, who would like to share knowledge, build connections and have the craic!”.

In the past, the group has also been instrumental in the Albert Basin Park Minecraft Project, mapping Newry on Open Street Maps and the two GovCampConnect events held at Narrow Water Castle. More recently the group are involved in a project to establish Newry as a Smart City by deploying ‘Internet of Things’ devices around the town providing data for local citizens and developers to explore and build upon. Newry Digital have also held numerous dojo events to encourage school children and adults with coding skills.

Newry Digital are keen to acknowledge the support over the past few years of The Hub co-working space, Newry BID, Flexiwork.space, Fat Fish Marketing and the SRC.
